Holiday After The Holiday

Another busy Christmas over and straight into 2015! Where does the time go.

After a hectic seven days in Sydney, a holiday after the holiday was needed – lucky I had envisioned this already with three nights in Kuala Lumpur prebooked.

Sydney airport was crammed with holiday makers desperate to say Bon Voyage to busy Christmas season. The flight wasn’t great unfortunately, every seat taken with the bad weather ensuring everyone stayed in a permanent state of nervousness. However I made it!

After a quick check at KL airport for duty free goods, not happy to part with almost $200AU for verve champagne, I promptly rushed through the airport exit and entered Malaysia for the very first time.

An hour later and roughly $20AU lighter I arrived at the Shangri-La Hotel. The drive reminded me of various other cities – the vast flat grounds and temple like buildings reminiscent of Morocco, roads veered into Bali and Kho Samoui then finally the high mountains of Hong Kong overlooking the central high-rises.

First impressions of people were not overly positive. But I am in a Muslim country and their culture is very different from my own. (Wearing a lowish – although ankle length, dress probably didn’t help).

However my first impressions couldn’t have been further from the truth. The Malaysian people were lovely – friendly, helpful and generally happy to have tourists in their country.

From a creative point of view my favourite experience involved searching through the local and Central markets for handmade Batik fabrics. The colours and designs are incredible filled with individuality and intricacy.

And after three short days, it’s back to Singapore and back to reality!

Wishing you all very successful 2015.
